Julia Mamaea, mother of Severus Alexander (died 235CE)

Julia Mamaea, mother of Severus Alexander (died 18 March 235CE). Julia Avita Mamaea was the second daughter of Julia Maesa and mother of Severus Alexander, and the real power behind him during his reign. She controlled the young emperor very strictly even to selecting Barbia Orbiana as his wife. She had Orbiana thrown out of the palace when she gained influence on Alexander. In 235, Alexander and Julia traveled north to repel a German attack, but proved to be an incompetent general. They were assassinated as Alexander clung to his mother in a tent, on March 18, 235.
